Motivation: 

Even though it has been a year since the on-set of the first case of COVID, there are no cheap and effective face mask detection software applied to ensure that people are adhering to requirements of putting on Masks. It can be used in many fields like transportation, food delivery, package delivery, entry into restaurants in  populated urban areas, residential and commercial areas, large manufacturing companies and other enterprises to guarantee the safety of employers,employees and customers.

 

The story and its details :

 

Tom is a 50-year-old small grocery owner in the Kansas City downtown area. He bought a grocery store called “Shop and Stop” recently from his entire lifetime savings. However, life had different plans and Covid-19 affected his business like most business owners very adversely. Even though it’s not recommended, Tom would love to  have his store open so as to have some source of income to provide for his household. Due to low purchase volume, he wants to run the store by himself and not hire anyone. Moreso, from the statistics and analysis performed during the pandemic, we realized that older men have a high risk of contacting covid and possibly dying. Tom doesn’t want to risk his life by getting in contact with people who do not wear a mask Hence, it would be great if there was a software available for Tom to monitor entry into his store and only allow those customers wearing a mask to enter. Moreso, implementing this software will help Tom save on having to hire someone to keep near the entrance of the store. 

The story particularly revolves around people wearing a preventive mask and those not wearing a preventive mask. Once this software is built it can be utilized in all small shops, so that the owners can ensure their businesses are up and running as well as practicing guidelines recommended by CDC. The dataset contains images for training, testing and building the model.

 

 

Who are the characters or people in the main story?

The story revolves around people wearing a mask and not wearing a preventive mask. What problem happened to them?

Face mark is recommended by CDC and hiring people just to ensure this is very expensive for all small shops.

 

 

Where did the problem take place?

In the grocery store that Tom just bought, it is a very small and Tom do not have the financial luxury to pay money to people just to validate if the incoming customers are wearing a mask or not. This problem is a wide spread issue for many other neighborhood shops.

Why?

Due to this pandemic, wearing a mask is highly recommended and studies also prove that old people are more prone to COVID-19 then younger ones.

 

How?

We will try to deploy a model that will detect if the person is wearing a mask or not. If the person is wearing a mask, then entry will be provided into the store else we will recommend him to wear one to get the entry. We will try to add temperature detection and connecting it with physical gate if possible.

  1. Detect COVID-19 face masks in images
  2. Detect face masks in real-time video streams
