Many people in the United States are affected by chronic preventable diseases (like diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease) that can be avoided, managed, and mitigated by self-management, including maintaining healthy eating and exercise habits.
The scope of our app is to make these 2 self-management activities easier. Our app will essentially allow users to easily search and filter for healthy recipes and exercise videos, which can then be saved and organized into a schedule using some time-management functionality like a planner, calendar or todo list. Additionally, the app will have the following components: a user login, summary/visualization of nutritional analysis of recipe, and (tentative) summary/visualization of video comment sentiment analysis.
We use MongoDB for register/login page. For recipe search and nutritional analysis, we are taking data from the EDAMAM API. For exercise search we are taking data from the YouTube API. For searching both recipe and video lookup, we use ‘q’. For the recipe search, we can use some values to select the specific recipe. For instance, ‘diet=low-carb’, ‘health = alcohol-free’, ‘mealtype=breakfast’ etc. For YouTube lookup, if users click the node, it will go to youtube.com. Please refer to data story for more details.
In the scope of our project, we will NOT INCLUDE user-inputted medical or biometric data (or app functionalities) that involve continuous monitoring of the user’s state. This includes intake of medicines, visiting doctors, and health/medical stats (weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol etc) of the user. The reasoning for this is that, firstly, the health-related information is sensitive and beyond our ability to make sure it is kept safely un-identifiable according to the standards of the API (ex: Apple’s HealthKit). We may even struggle to gain access to biometric information if we do not meet the API’s standards. Next, it is not relevant for our target community of young post-secondary students and professionals, who mostly have NOT developed a moderate to severe version of one of the mentioned chronic diseases, to heavily track such medical information.
Due to our timeframe, though this is mentioned only briefly in the user story, we will NOT ADD a component to our app that deals heavily with affordability or locality/nearby availability of the recipes and their ingredients–or something similar for the exercises and the tools used in the exercise videos. This is also not a problem for our target group, because young adults in a new location away from home will choose to stick to the nearby shopping centers and do their exercise at home, which is a common location for exercise videos.
We also decided to EXCLUDE Todo list/Planner because we lost one teammate and do not have enough time frame for that.
