DAY 1

Greeting (1:00pm – 1:40pm)

Groups meet in breakout rooms to get to know each other (10 minutes): choosing group leader and note taker

Session 1. Connecting machine learning with storytelling: from stories to data, data to machine learning. (1:40pm – 2:40pm)

  • This session includes four presentations on current Data Science + X projects:
    • Fairness in AI & implicit bias: Ye Wang and Syed Jawad H. Shah (10 minutes + 5 minutes’ Q&A) – View Presentation
    • Community engagement: Brent Never and Duy Ho (10 minutes + 5 minutes’ Q&A) – View Presentation
    • Human-in-the-loop ML: Jeff Rydberg-Cox and Mayanka Chandra Shekar (10 minutes + 5 minutes’ Q&A) – View Presentation
    • Innovation in Education: Srichakradhar Nagireddy (EduKC, 5 minutes) and Brian Hare (teaching ethics in computer science, 5 minutes) + 5 minutes’ Q&A – View Presentation 

Coffee break (2:40pm – 2:50pm)

Session 2. “Story telling for data science” by You Li & Alexis Petri (2:50pm – 3:30pm)

  • Overview of Assignment 1 by You Li and Alexis Petri (10 minute)
    • Team Assignment 1: Each team submits a use case using 5W+H, with the sequence of decision-making process.
  • Presentation (30 minutes) – View Presentation

DAY 2

Greeting (1pm – 1:15pm)

  • Warm-up: Breakout room (15 minutes)

Session 3 “Data to Models” (1:15pm – 2:05pm)

  • Team Assignment 2 (15 minutes)
    • Explain how you can use Assignment 1 to build Assignment 2.
  • Dr. Lee will give an overview on Data to Models (15 minutes): –  View Presentation
    • Give a presentation on “Data to Models;
    • And, demonstrate tool sets on OCEL.AI website.
  • Four parallel sessions on “Data to Models.”  You can choose whichever session you want to attend. Each session gives presentations on “Data to Models” in relation to a specific use case (20 minutes):

Session 5 “So-What & Ethics” by Huan Chen & Ye Wang (1:15pm – 1:40pm)

  • Team Assignment 4: the so-what question and fairness audit (10 minutes)
    • Please summarize to answers to these questions based upon your application/use case:
      • On the whole, how does your identity influence you working on this assignment or project?
      • What are good practices of collecting, managing, and using data while maintaining privacy?
      • What social issue was reflected by the pattern of the data that you observed? Social issues could include but not limited to the distribution of resources, disparity of resources among groups of populations, under or over representations of a group in one dimension.
      • What are the sources of bias in AI and big data?
      • What are the fallacies leading to people’s blind trust in “objective” algorithms?
      • What can we do to promote fairness in AI and big data?
  • Presentation by Huan Chen, and Ye Wang (5 minutes): – View Presentation 
    • Overview of ethical issues
    • How to use Assignment 3 to create Assignment 4.
  • Professor Brian Hare will talk about ethics in computer science. (5 minutes) – View Presentation 
  • Professor Peter Morello will talk about ethics in AI and our future in a world with AI. (5 minutes)
